Tailoring your resume is one of the most effective ways to capture an employer’s attention and increase your chances of securing an interview. Follow these five steps to ensure your resume clearly demonstrates alignment with each target position.

Step 1: Rewrite Highly Visible Sections to Reflect the Target Job

Focus on reworking the most prominent areas of your resume to highlight how your experience parallels the role you’re applying for.

Highly visible sections include:

  • Qualifications Summary or Professional Summary: Revise this section to directly align with the key requirements and priorities outlined in the job posting.

  • Core Competencies or Core Skills: Include only skills that are highly relevant to the target role.

  • First and Second Bullets Under Each Position: Rewrite these to highlight accomplishments or duties that connect to the target job’s core responsibilities. If you are early in your career or pursuing a career change, emphasize transferable skills and relevant experiences when tailoring your resume.

Step 2: Identify and Integrate Keywords from the Job Description

Incorporate language from the job posting to help your resume pass through applicant tracking systems (ATS) and appeal to hiring managers.

Identifying Keywords:

  • Review the job ad and highlight important or frequently used terms related to skills, responsibilities, and qualifications.

  • You can complete this manually or with the help of AI. If using AI, copy and paste the job posting into your preferred model and use this prompt:

“Please identify and highlight all keywords that should be integrated within my resume for this role.”

Integrating Keywords:

  • Identify which keywords are missing from your resume. You can complete this manually or by using AI.

o   Manual Process: Open your resume and use the Find function in Microsoft Word to check if specific terms already appear in your document.

o   AI Process: Use the following prompt:

“Please identify which of the following words are missing from my resume,” followed by the list of keywords you collected.

  • Add missing keywords naturally throughout your resume – especially in your qualifications or summary, core skills, and experience sections. Provide context to show how you’ve used each skill and focus on measurable accomplishments where possible.

  • If you don’t possess all the key skills or certifications listed in the job ad, consider including a bullet in your qualifications section that shows your willingness to learn.

  • Example: Committed to ongoing professional development and training, including pursuing PMP certification

Step 3: Use a Professional File Name

Your resume file name contributes to your professional image. Double-check that it is appropriately formatted and easy to identify.

Example:Firstname_Lastname_AccountingClerk_Resume.pdf

Avoid casual or unclear filenames such as MyResume.docx or UpdatedVersion3.pdf.

Step 4: Follow All Application Instructions

Carefully read the entire job posting and follow every instruction provided. Many employers now include specific directions within their postings (e.g., naming conventions, document formats, or application questions). Failing to follow directions may result in your application being overlooked.

Step 5: Ensure the “Gold” Is on Top

Review your resume layout to ensure the most relevant and impactful information appears early in the document. If key details that align with the target job are buried near the end, reorder sections or bullet points so your strongest qualifications are more visible.

Tailoring your resume may take extra effort, but it’s one of the most effective ways to stand out in a competitive job market. By rewriting key sections, integrating relevant keywords, following application instructions, and ensuring your strongest achievements are front and center, you’re showing employers that you’re not just a candidate, you’re the right candidate for the role.

Remember, your resume is often your first impression. Make it count by demonstrating alignment with the position and highlighting the value you bring.
